About Me

Loida Escote-Carlson earned her PhD degree in Genetics from the University of Illinois in Urbana-Champaign and her BS and Master’s degrees from the University of the Philippines.  She joined Cangene Corporation, a biotechnology company in Ontario, Canada, as a research scientist post-PhD, then moved to the Biotechnology Laboratory (now Michael Smith Laboratories) at the University of British Columbia (UBC) in Vancouver, Canada as a tenured Lecturer. At UBC, she established the Advanced Teaching Laboratory in Molecular Biology and all its programs for training graduate students, research staff and faculty as well as its K-12 outreach programs.  She was hired to establish a similar teaching and training laboratory at Penn State University and in addition started and directed the Master of Biotechnology degree program (MBIOT), that has since seen tremendous success in preparing students for broad career opportunities in biotechnology.  She co-founded the National Professional Science Masters Association and served in its Board of Directors for several years.  She initiated and co-organized the Biotechnology Advisory Board at Penn State consisting of successful ECoS alumni in the biotechnology industry to advise the Master of Biotechnology program as well as the intellectual property development in the College. She currently serves in the Faculty Advisory Board for the CSL-Behring Center of Excellence in Industrial Biotechnology. She continues to serve as academic adviser to students in the MBIOT program and to teach the freshman year seminar class in biotechnology as well as graduate courses in molecular biology and biotechnology.
